นพ.ณัฐพงศ์ วงศ์วิวัฒน์ รองอธิบดีกรมการแพทย์ เปิดเผยว่า มะเร็งตับเกิดจากการกลายพันธุ์และการเจริญเติบโตที่ผิดปกติของเซลล์ตับ ผู้ป่วยส่วนใหญ่มักมีโรคที่ทำให้เกิดความผิดปกติของตับมาก่อน โดยเฉพาะผู้ป่วยที่เป็นโรคตับแข็งจากสาเหตุต่างๆ เช่น การดื่มสุราหรือติดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบชนิดบีหรือซี หรือภาวะไขมันพอกตับ ผู้ป่วยส่วนหนึ่งที่ติดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบบีเรื้อรังหรือไขมันพอกตับ อาจเกิดมะเร็งตับได้โดยที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องมีภาวะตับแข็งนำมาก่อน จากข้อมูลมะเร็งในภาคใต้ปี 2564-2566 พบว่ามะเร็งตับพบมากติด 10 อันดับแรก
พญ.นิธิมา ศรีเกตุ ผอ.รพ.มะเร็งสุราษฎร์ธานี กล่าวว่า มะเร็งตับพบมากในเพศชายมากกว่าเพศหญิง 2 เท่า ปัจจุบันมีการฉีดวัคซีนป้องกันไวรัสตับอักเสบชนิดบีให้กับเด็กตั้งแต่แรกคลอด แต่สำหรับประชาชนที่เกิดก่อนปี 2535 ที่ยังไม่มีการผลิตวัคซีนดังกล่าว สามารถไปรับการเจาะเลือดเพื่อคัดกรองไวรัสตับอักเสบชนิดบีและชนิดซีได้ฟรี ที่โรงพยาบาลใกล้บ้าน.
